History of Kilkea Castle
The Castle is a significant landmark of Irish history and has a long and varied past. Constructed in 1180 by Hugh de Lacy, the Earl of Ulster and Chief Governor of Ireland, Kilkea Castle was initially built for Walter de Riddlesford, a Norman knight who arrived in Ireland during the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169. The Kilkea Estate, which included the castle and surrounding lands, was originally owned by Walter de Riddlesford before passing to his son-in-law Milo le Bret in 1209.
The estate then passed from generation to generation of the Eustace family until it came into the possession of Sir Thomas Eustace in 1548. Sir Thomas Eustace was a powerful figure during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and provided her with military support, resulting in him being granted a royal lease for the Castle and its surrounding lands. During this time, the castle was transformed into a luxurious country house and remained so until 1641 when it was attacked and destroyed by the Irish rebels during the Rising of 1641.
In 1773, Sir Simon Luttrell purchased Kilkea Castle and it remained in his family for several generations until 1861 when it was sold to William Henry Annesley who set about restoring the castle and its lands. Following this period of restoration, the Castle was opened to the public in 1876. It remains a popular tourist destination today and is admired for its impressive architecture, stunning views and interesting history.
