History of Conwy Castle
Conwy Castle is a 13th century fortress located in the walled town of Conwy in North Wales. The castle was built during the reign of Edward I, between 1283 and 1289, as part of his campaign to conquer and subdue Wales. It was constructed on the site of an earlier Cistercian monastery favoured by the Welsh princes, as well as one of their palaces called llys. The castle was built to protect the town and port of Conwy from attack and overlooks the nearby River Conwy.
The castle walls extend along three sides and are surrounded by a ditch. At its highest point, the curtain wall stands 40 feet tall and is 2.3 miles long, with 22 towers and 8 gates. The main entrance was through the King’s Gate, which was protected by two large drum towers and a drawbridge over the moat. Inside the castle walls were various buildings and chambers, including a chapel, kitchen, great hall and royal apartments.
During its heyday, Conwy Castle was considered one of the best defensive castles in the British Isles. It withstood several sieges, including a three-year siege by Welsh forces during Edward I’s war against Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in 1282-83. In 1646, it also held out for three months against Parliamentary troops during the English Civil War.
