The castle’s oldest feature is the motte, an artificial mound constructed by Roger de Montgomery in 1068 and standing more than 100 feet tall from the dry moat below. King Henry I recognized its importance in his will and settled the Castle and lands in dower on his second wife Adeliza of Louvain. Her new husband, William d’Albini II, followed by building the stone shell keep on the motte in 1072.
The castle also has a great hall which is believed to have been built at the end of 12th century and extended during 15th century. During its history Arundel Castle had gone through various modifications and renovations undertaken by both its owners and the government.
