Glamis Castle has a long and storied history, stretching back to the 13th century when it was first constructed. Since 1987, an illustration of the castle has featured on the reverse side of ten pound notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Today, Glamis Castle is privately owned by Simon Bowes-Lyon, 19th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who succeeded to the earldom in 2016. The History of Glamis Castle
Glamis Castle has a long and storied history. The title of Lord Glamis was created in 1445 for Sir Patrick Lyon (1402–1459), grandson of Sir John. Situated in Angus, Scotland, the castle has been home to the Lyon family since 1372 and is a popular tourist destination today. In December 1528, tragedy struck when Janet Douglas, daughter of the Master of Angus and wife of John Lyon, 6th Lord Glamis, was accused of treason. She had brought supporters of the Earl of Angus to Edinburgh, but eventually she was falsely accused of poisoning her husband and witchcraft. On 17 July 1537, Janet was burned at the stake in Edinburgh. The death of her husband and the accusations against her caused James V to seize Glamis castle for himself, living there for some time.
Glamis Castle has also long been associated with tales of mystery and romance. It is said to be the setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth and is believed by some to be the home of a hidden monster. The castle was also where Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, spent part of her childhood in the 1940s. Today, Glamis Castle is owned by the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who opened it to the public for tours in 1979. Visitors can explore its many rooms and gardens, which have been carefully preserved by the family. It is a remarkable example of Scottish history and architecture that is sure to delight visitors for years to come.
